THE FACTS

Lifting heavy weights makes you big and bulky — or at least that’s the conventional wisdom. It’s the reason many women (and some men) who want slim and “toned” physiques opt for lighter weights, lifted more times.

But the notion is not supported by science. Producing bulky muscles requires not just heavy weights but heavy calorie consumption as well, typically far above the 2,000 daily calories recommended for many adults.

You don’t have to be Charles Atlas to power up with strength training. This kind of exercise is a key to fitness for everyone – especially seniors. Stacks of scientific studies prove this. In fact, senior muscles may benefit more from strength training than young ones.

Strength training has many names. Resistance training, weight lifting, working out, and pumping iron are just a few. Whatever, you call it, it’s more valuable, easy, and fun than you probably imagined. For instance, you may not know that strength training can rev up your metabolism and help you burn off more calories around the clock.

It gets results by “stressing” your muscles more than your humdrum daily activities do. This stress could come from doing pushups, pressing a dumbbell above your head, or curling a coffee can. Believe it or not, muscles live for this extra work. It makes them stronger and healthier.

It may be a bit hard to believe that exercises just using your body weight can be the fastest way to build muscle. If you've spent any time at all in the gym, you may be of the721057.jpg belief that you must lift extremely heavy weights to make a difference in your muscle mass. Sometimes, lifting heavier is not always the best option to the fastest way to build muscle.

The truth is, exercises using your body weight can actually be more challenging than lifting heavy weights. Body weight exercises, if performed correctly, will work your entire body. This is much more difficult than using a set of dumbbells which only isolate specific muscles.
